Dadra and Nagar Haveli Election 2019: Will BJP's Nathubhai emerge victorious for a record third time?

As per the census data of 2011, more than half (51.95 per cent) of the population belongs to the Scheduled Tribes, which is why the Lok Sabha seat is reserved for the Scheduled Tribe candidates.

Silvassa: The Union Territory (UT) of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is spread between Maharashtra and Gujarat. The constituency came to existence in 1967. The polling to constituency took place on April 23 in the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Nathubhai Gomanbhai Patel took on Prabhu Ratnabhai Tokiya of the Congress. Six-time MP and tribal leader Mohanbhai Delkar, who was fielded by the Congress in 2014, contested as an independent candidate in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli was liberated from the clutches of Portuguese in 1954. The culture of the Union Territory seems to be influenced by Portuguese. As per the census data of 2011, more than half (51.95 per cent) of the population belongs to the Scheduled Tribes, which is why the Lok Sabha seat is reserved for the Scheduled Tribe candidates.

The Dadra and Nagar Haveli constituency had always been a bastion of the Congress party till 1996. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Natubhai Gomanbhai Patel of the BJP defeated Mohanbhai Sanjibhai Delkar of the Congress by a margin of 6,214 or 3.8 per cent votes. The voter turnout in the region was recorded at 84.1 per cent.

As per the census 2011, the UT has a population of 2,42,853, with the literacy rate of 77.65 per cent. The economy of the region is largely dependent on agriculture and several large as well as small scale industries.

Eleven candidates were in the fray for Dadra and Nagar Haveli Lok Sabha seat. The poll results will be declared on May 23.
