New Delhi: Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir, the BJP MP candidate from East Delhi, on Tuesday held a roadshow ahead of filing his nomination papers. Gambhir replaced sitting BJP MP Maheish Girri. He will be pitted against Congress candidate Arvinder Singh Lovely and Aam Aadmi Party’s Atishi.

"I really want to contribute something to the country and whatever our PM has done in the last five years, I want to take that legacy forward," said Gambhir.

Meanwhile, incumbent East Delhi MP Maheish Girri congratulated Gambhir for his candidature.

Gambhir had joined the BJP on March 22 in the presence of Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad. "I am joining this party (BJP) after getting influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. I am honoured to get the opportunity. I will work to take this country forward and make it a better place to live in," Gambhir had told the reporters after joining the BJP.

The 37-year-old Gambhir, who hails from Delhi's Rajinder Nagar, had campaigned for Arun Jaitley in Amritsar in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. The BJP had, however, faced defeat from that constituency.

Since then, Gambhir has been quite vocal in lending support to the BJP and the policies of Narendra Modi-led government on Twitter.

It was on December 04, 2018, that Gambhir officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
