Lakshadweep Election 2019: Mohammed Faizal PP eyes second Lok Sabha term

Mohammed Faizal PP of the NCP won the constituency of Lakshadweep in 2014, defeating Muhammed Hamdullah Sayeed of the Congress by a margin of 1,535 or 3.6 per cent votes.

Kavaratti: The Lakshadweep Islands are of a group of 39 islands in the south-west of India. The Union Territory comes under the jurisdiction of the Kerala High Court at Kochi. The Lakshadweep Lok Sabha constituency located in the Arabian Sea went to polls in the first phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on April 11. Abdul Khader Haji of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fought against Hamadullah Sayeed of the Congress and Mohammed Faizal PP of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Lakshadweep constituency is reserved for the Scheduled Tribe category candidate. The poll results will be declared on May 23.

Hamadullah Sayeed is the son of PM Sayeed, who has been a major figure in the political history of Lakshadweep. He has won all the elections between 1967-1999. Sayeed's winning spree came to a halt when he was outperformed by P Pookunhikoya of the JD(U) by just 71 votes. Taking his father’s legacy forward, Hamadullah won the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, becoming the youngest member of the Lok Sabha. 

Mohammed Faizal PP of the NCP won the constituency of Lakshadweep in 2014, defeating Muhammed Hamdullah Sayeed of the Congress by a margin of 1,535 or 3.6 per cent votes. The constituency witnessed 86.6 per cent voter turnout in 2014.

Lakshadweep's economy is largely dependent on tourism and fisheries. Besides this, coconut fibre extraction and production of fibre products also play an important role in the economic development of the constituency.
