Raipur (Chhattisgarh) Election 2019: BJP's Sunil Soni fights Pramod Dubey of Congress

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Ramesh Bais got 52.36 per cent votes and defeated Satya Narayan of the Congress who secured a voting percentage of 38.64.

Raipur: Raipur, one of the 11 Lok Sabha constituencies of Chhattisgarh, went to polls in the third phase of the 2019 general elections which were held on April 23. Raipur is the capital of Chhattisgarh. Sunil Soni of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested against Pramod Dubey of the Congress, Khilesh Kumar Sahu alias Khileshwar of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Santosh Yadu of the Shiv Sena.

Ramesh Bias of the BJP won the seat of Raipur the first time in the 1989 general elections. He lost the seat in 1991 to Congress veteran Vidyacharan Shukla. Ramesh Bais won the seat back in 1996 and consecutively from then to 2014. Since then, the seat of Raipur has been a stronghold of the BJP. 

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Ramesh Bais got 52.36 per cent votes and defeated Satya Narayan of the Congress who secured a voting percentage of 38.64. The vote margin between them was 1,71,646. The BJP did not field Ramesh Bias in the constituency of Raipur in the face of anti-incumbency. 

Raipur Lok Sabha constituency comprises of nine Assembly constituencies which are Baloda Bazar, Bhatapara, Dharsiwa, Raipur Rural, Raipur City West, Raipur City North, Raipur City South, Arang (SC) and Abhanpur.

The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections will elect the 17th Lok Sabha of the nation. The results of the polls will be declared on May 23. More than 8,000 candidates and 1,800 political parties are in fray for 543 Lok Sabha seats.
