The Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt-starrer big-ticket film Gully Boy released on Thursday to overwhelming response at the box-office. In some circuits, the musical drama, directed by Zoya Akhtar, registered an occupancy of over 80 per cent, which is mind-boggling given the fact that it did not feature the quintessential elements of a mass entertainer.

According to a report on Box Office India, Gully Boy is competing with biggies such as Thugs of Hindostan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Baahubali 2 (Hindi), Sanju and Singham Returns in the Mumbai and Pune circuits.

The report says that Thugs of Hindostan had opened with collections of Rs 3.75 crore and Rs 1.95 crore in Mumbai and Pune respectively. For Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Baahubali 2 (Hindi), the opening-day collections in Mumbai and Pune were close to Rs 3.50 crore and Rs 1.90 crore each, respectively.

Sanju and Singham Returns, the report claims, had scored Rs 3.20 crore and Rs 3.40 crore in Mumbai on their respective opening days. Gully Boy, on the other hand, may end up minting Rs 3 crore from the Maximum City alone on Day 1. The figure speaks volumes about the craze that Mumbaikars have for the film. The fact that it tells the story of a Dharavi-based street rapper and has the chaste Bambaiya touch to it has clearly worked in its favour.

Gully Boy, also starring Kalki Koechlin, Vijay Raaz and Siddhant Chaturvedi in important roles, received mostly positive reviews upon its release. The word of mouth for the film is fantastic.
