Shattering one stereotype at a time, here's why Meghan Markle is the newsmaker of the year

Meghan Markle has caught herself in the eye of the storm the second the paparazzi spotted her along with the most eligible bachelor, Prince Harry. With Meghan flying back and forth to London to Prince Harry being spotted with Meghan's mom, Doria, speculations of another royal wedding kept the entire world at the edge of their seat. But come December 2017, the lovebirds announced their engagement that kept the internet buzzing for months. Whether it was Meghan being older to her groom or that an American was all set to enter the Royal Family, people couldn't stop obsessing. 

With adorable pictures from their engagement shoot being released by Kensington Palace, Meghan and Harry's love story won the internet over. Although various reports of a potential discomfort between Kate Middleton and Meghan were doing the rounds, Meghan developed an unmatchable fanbase that looked up to her as a role model. While we inch closer towards the New Year, here's looking at why Meghan is the newsmaker of the year. 

Meghan was raised with mixed heritage with her mother being an African America and her dad, Caucasian. Raised by a single mother, Meghan spoke about her heritage to Elle, “I’m half black and half white…While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice  my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

Apart from being the first royal member from a mixed race, Meghan has strongly spoken about being a feminist and strongly supporting gender equality. Speaking about feminism, Meghan earlier said, "Women’s suffrage is about feminism, but feminism is about fairness. Suffrage is not simply about the right to vote but also about what that represents. The basic and fundamental human right of being able to participate in the choices for your future and that of your community."

The Royal weddings are all about following traditions. But Meghan decided to give the traditions a miss. With her father missing the ceremony citing health conditions, Meghan walked down the aisle alone. She was joined by Prince Charles till the alter, but she shattered the glass ceiling by walking alone. 

While we've never seen the Royals engage in any kind of public display of affection, Meghan and Harry are two royals who've never been bothered by it. Whether it's holding hands or stealing a kiss, Meghan and Harry are adorable and probably the most relatable royals. 

Now, just how often do we see a Duchess holding the umbrella for her Prince Charming? 

We often hear about all the protocols that the Duchess' have to follow in regard to their sartorial sensibilities. But Meghan has always chosen comfort and her personal style about everything else. Whether it's donning pants or black nail paint, Meghan has only been shelling out fashion goals with her fashion statements. 

Over the last few weeks, Meghan has been at the receiving end of trolls for the move of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex away from Kensington Palace. Various media reports suggest that it's due to an animosity with Kate whereas various other reports suggest that Harry is miffed with his older brother, Prince William for not giving Meghan a warm welcome.
