Dausa: “Smoking is injurious to health. It causes cancer.”

We have all heard this at least once in our life. We have also heard how bad withdrawal symptoms of nicotine addiction can be. A town in Rajasthan put up a display of that very fact on Tuesday.

People queued up in hundreds outside the residence of a beedi seller in Lalsot town of Dausa district in Rajasthan, flouting social distancing norms and personal hygiene protocols.

Earlier, long queues were witnessed outside liquor stores as soon as the state government permitted sale of alcohol during the ensuing fourth phase of country-wide lockdown due to coronavirus.

However, the state government allowed the sale of beedi and guthka from today, leading to serpentine queues by eager locals who were deprived of their intoxications for around two months due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

As a result, social distancing norms were also flouted. The people who had lined up were neither wearing masks nor keeping distance from each other. This was a clear violation of the relaxation norms put in place by the state and central governments as well as the Dausa administration.

As soon as the police got information about this, they reached the spot and tried to ensure social distancing between the locals. But, since the crowd consisted of a large number of people, social distancing norms were invariably flouted yet again.

Surprisingly, the beedi vendor distributed the beedis to the common man from the warehouse of his residence.
