Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake: Water level crosses danger mark; floodgates opened to release excess water - WATCH

Chandigarh: The floodgates of Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake were opened by the authorities on Monday after the water level crossed the danger mark. Officials of the engineering department opened the gates after water level crossed 1,163 feet, designated as danger mark. Water at the lake was at 1,161 feet last week but incessant rainfall has led to the level crossing the danger mark.

As per a report in The Times of India, the water level surged to 1,162 feet and crossed 1163 feet today afternoon. The last time the floodgates of the Sukhna Lake were opened was in 2008 when also the water level had crossed the danger mark.

The governments of Punjab and Haryana have been formed by officials of the administration of Chandigarh, which is a Union Territory.

Sukhna is a manmade lake and covers an area of 148 hectares. Way back in 1958, the lake used to spread across an area of 228 hectares.

Meanwhile, normal life has been disrupted in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh amid continuing moderate to heavy rainfall. In Punjab, downstream areas from where rivers Sutlej, Beas and Ravi pass have been put on alert. In Haryana as well, areas that fall on the downstream of river Yamuna have been alerted for possible flooding.

Water-logging and accumulation of water have been reported from several areas in Amritsar, Chandigarh and Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana. Traffic was also affected in these cities and towns. Two deaths have been reported from Punjab due to rains.
