New Delhi: As many as 44 violations were committed by foreigners visiting the Andaman and Nicobar islands- the Union Home Ministry (MHA) was told on Wednesday. According to a report received by the Ministry from Andaman and Nicobar administration, the MHA is mulling the imposition of Restricted Area Permit (RAP), under which people are prohibited from visiting certain areas of the island- news agency PTI reported.

The report was sought by the Ministry in light of the recent death of John Allen Chau, a US missionary, who was allegedly killed by the North Sentinelese people on November 16, when he illegally visited the island by bribing local fishermen.

It may be noted that North Sentinel is one of the 29 islands where foreigners are required to obtain special permissions before paying visits. While RAP, which was in place earlier on these islands, was withdrawn in June, a central delegation of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) is likely to visit Andamans to take stock of the situation that resulted in Chau's death- news agency PTI reported.

According to the PTI report, Chau and the fishermen left for North Sentinel island at 8 pm on November 14 and reached the island by midnight. After dropping the missionary, who wanted to spread Christianity to the island, the fishermen returned. When they re-visited the island to bring Chau back, at a predetermined time on November 17, they saw that the people on the island were burying the dead body of a person, who appeared to be like Chau. The police took custody of the fishermen who narrated the incident to the cops.
