New Delhi: Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for terming the opposition alliance for upcoming Lok Sabha elections as “adulterated”, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, on Sunday, took a potshot at BJP's choice of alliance partners.

Kumaraswamy, who was a part of the central alliance, also said that coalition governments in the past were successful, unlike ruling dispensation, according to NDTV.

"In a democracy like ours, coalition is necessary... (former Prime Ministers) Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh have contributed to the development of this country, according to me," said the leader of the Janata Dal-Secular, which came to power in Karnataka last May after forging an alliance with Congress.

The Karnataka CM also criticised the policies of the BJP-led Centre, saying that all its schemes including farm loan waivers in Uttar Pradesh and central scheme for subsidised cooking gas to economically deprived families, failed to achieve their aim.

Kumaraswamy questioned whether PM Modi's alliance with Nitish Kumar in Bihar is a holy alliance. He further said that BJP’s attempt to forge an alliance with ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu is also “questionable”.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Modi took a jibe at the Opposition for forming an alliance to take on BJP government in the general elections and said that their idea of the grand alliance is adulterated. Speaking in the Parliament, the PM said that people would not cast their vote for "a milawat ki sarkar (adulterated government)".
