Aizawl: Days after ending Congress' ten years tenure in Mizoram, Mizo National Front (MNF) chief Zoramthanga took oath as the chief minister of Mizoram at the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on Saturday. Zoramthanga, who has previously held the position of the chief minister of the state twice in the past, has been a former rebel leader and was a close associate of Laldenga, the founder of MNF and one of the tallest leaders of Mizo politics.

Governor K Rajasekharan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Zoramthanga at the ceremony held at Raj Bhawan in Aizawl.  On Wednesday, Governor Rajasekharan had formally invited Zoramthanga to form the next government in the state after his party emerged as the single largest party in the state by winning 26 seats in the recently-concluded Mizoram Assembly Elections. In the 40-member Assembly, Congress party, which had been in power since 2008, was reduced to only 5 seats.

Meanwhile, the BJP finally managed to open its account in the state by winning one seat in the state polls which took place on November 28. BJP has not a single seat in any of the seven elections that have been held in the state ever since Mizoram was formed. The newly formed unregistered Zoram Peoples Movement bagged eight seats. The majority mark in Mizoram Assembly in 21.

The Congress had dominated the 2013 elections, winning 34 out of the 40 seats in the Assembly. On the other hand, the MNF had won only 5 seats despite having 31 of its candidates contesting the polls. In 2013, the Congress again won the elections with a comfortable majority, grabbing 32 out of the 40 seats and the MNF winning only three.
