New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Tuesday, wrote a letter to Awanish Awasthi, Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary (Home) saying that she had received his letter late at night and that sending buses to Lucknow would be 'inhumane'.

The letter read, "We received your letter via email late night at 11:40 pm asking us to handover 1000 buses along with required documents in Lucknow at 10 am."

"Migrant workers are stranded at the UP border, especially Delhi-UP border. At a time when 1000s of them are walking on roads, & have gathered at UP border for registration, sending 1000 empty buses to Lucknow is not only waste of time&resources but also inhumane," it further said.

She further wrote: "Along with being inhuman, this approach is grossly anti-poor in nature. It does not appear that the Uttar Pradesh government is committed to helping the migrant workers."

"We are firm on our stand that we will help arrange transport of the migrant workers to their homes. We request you to appoint nodal officers so that we are able to establish coordination with them and transport the migrant workers stranded on the Delhi-UP border to their homes," he added.

Migrants stranded at the Delhi-UP border

A huge crowd of the migrant workers gathered at Ghazipur near the Delhi-UP border on Sunday after the Uttar Pradesh government announced that busses would be arranged to ferry them home.

Prachanda Tyagi, Sub-inspector Uttar Pradesh police, while talking about the gathering of the migrant workers, had, on Sunday, said, "There is a large crowd here in Gazipur at the Delhi-UP border. We are asking them to take trains or buses. No person without a valid pass is allowed to enter the state."

Movement restrictions at NH24

In an attempt to stop the movement of migrant workers towards the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, the Delhi Police had, on Sunday, heavily barricaded the road leading towards Ghazipur on NH24. Only those with essential services or with valid movement passes were allowed to move. Rest everybody was being sent back.

The restrictions on vehicular movement had to be imposed because many migrant workers took a lift in trucks, buses and private vehicles to reach Ghazipur, that ultimately resulted in a huge congregation of migrant workers at the Delhi-UP border who were waiting to reach back home in their native places..
