Rain fury claims 42 lives across Himachal, Punjab, Uttarakhand; downpour to continue says IMD

While 22 people have lost their lives in Himachal, 17 have died in Uttarakhand and three in Punjab in rain-induced floods. Meanwhile, a flood alert has been sounded in Delhi and Haryana.

New Delhi: Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in the northern parts of the country with 42 dead and more than 20 missing in Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, and Punjab. Furthermore, Delhi and Haryana have been put on flood alert following the release of  8.14 lakh cusec water from the Hathni Kund barrage on the Yamuna river.

While 22 lives have been lost in Himachal, 17 have died with more than 20 missing in Uttrakhand following a cloudburst. Three have reportedly died in Punjab. This has come at a time when the southern parts of the country are already bearing the brunt of incessant rains leading to flooding. The death toll in flood-ravaged Kerala climbed to 121 with the retrieval of more bodies. 

New Delhi

The national capital has been put on alert as the water level in the Yamuna is expected to rise further in next 24 hours after 8.14 lakh cusec water was released from the Hathni Kund barrage in Haryana at 5 pm. The river is currently flowing at a 204.70-metre height.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has called for an emergency meeting of concerned officials over the rising water level in the Yamuna. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will chair the meeting.  

Uttar Pradesh

Water levels in many rivers across Uttar Pradesh have increased to the dangerous mark. Ganga is flowing above the danger mark in Badaun, Garhmukteshwar, Naraura, and Farrukhabad. Similarly, the Sharda river at Paliakalan and the Ghaghra river at Elginbridge are flowing above the red mark, the Central Water Commission was quoted by PTI as saying. 

Himachal Pradesh

In Himachal, the rains are expected to continue on Monday as well. Among the dead, nine are from Shimla, five from Solan, two each from Kullu, Sirmaur, and Chamba and one each in Una and Lahaul-Spiti districts. Train services have also been disrupted after multiple landslides. Meanwhile, the state weather department has said that the downpour is likely to continue for the next 24 hours. Over 500 people are reportedly stranded in several parts of the state as a number of roads have been blocked by landslides and flash floods.

Punjab

In Punjab, three members of a family were killed after roof of their house collapsed, while as many as 11 were rescued from a flooded village in Gurdaspur district. The Indian Air Force on Monday morning also rescued nine people stuck in Karnal district due to a sudden rise in the waters of the Yamuna.

Uttarakhand

In Uttrakhand,17 people have died in a cloud burst in Mori tehsil of Uttarkashi while Rajasthan has heaved a sigh of relief as water has started receding and there's no-flood like situation anywhere in the state.
