A well-fitted pair of jeans is, inarguably, a wardrobe staple. Be it going all casual yet stylish or opting for comfortable fashion, the multi-faceted denim is a must-have. But while we love to wear jeans, most people are always confused as to when is the right time to wash them. While most of us end up washing our jeans pretty often, fabric experts have a different take.

According to some fabric experts, you should keep your jeans away from machine wash for at least 6 to 7 months. In the jeans capital of the world, Amsterdam, many designers are working exclusively on unwashed denims and while speaking to a daily, one of the designers named Lennaert Nijgh explained why you should not wash your jeans that often.

“When you wear your pair of jeans for a long period of time without washing it, it starts to reflect your lifestyle. That’s the point of unwashed denim. You make it into your own, however, you like it. When you wash raw denim and it goes all soft, that’s the fibres breaking down.”

Koen Tossijn, a Dutch designer, on the other hand, said that he is quite okay with the idea of washing your jeans frequently. You would be amazed to know that some of the biggest brands of jeans from across the globe swear by not washing the jeans too often.

Chip Bergh, Levi’s CEO once said that one should keep their jeans out of the washing machine. He also added that he hadn’t washed his jeans in over a year. In fact, Tommy Hilfiger also revealed once that he never washes his Levi’s denims or else “they will fall apart”. The designer even called the idea of washing jeans often as “crazy”.

While you might be thinking that not washing your jeans in this hot and humid climate is not a good idea, it certainly is advisable for you to give it a try. If you are skeptical about what to do when your favourite pair gets dirty, then fret not.

According to Nijgh, if you feel that your jeans are dirty, just soak it in hot water for some time or put it in the freezer. Both these methods will kill the germ. But if you have spilt something on it then it’s better to give it a wash. But make sure it is not very frequent.

So, if your mother asks you now to wash your jeans, tell them that this one time, they are wrong!
