Chandigarh: Over 46,000 criminal and civil cases pending in district courts; pendency reaches an all time low

The Chandigarh district court released data relating to the number of pending cases in the country. More than 40,000 criminal and civil cases were pending in the district courts during the end of 2018.

Chandigarh: A shocking revelation which questions the state of law and order in the country has been made by the Chandigarh district court. The data released shows that the number of pending cases in the Chandigarh district courts has increased sharply. The pendency of cases has increased to around 6,000 a year.

The data released by the Chandigarh district court shows that the pendency of cases has increased to 6,000 in a year and this figure is the highest recorded in the past five years.

According to the report by the Indian Express, the data states that initially, 40,830 civil and criminal cases were pending but by end-2018, the number increased to 46,783. 

The data also adds that 42,687 cases commenced in the year 2018 out of which, 36,734 were completed by the judicial and sessions trial courts. By the end of the year 2018, 5,953 cases were still pending. The maximum number of cases pending are the cases under Negotiable Instruments (NI) Act which is 13,813 by the end of the year 2018.

In 2018, 844 criminal cases commenced, out of which, 705 were completed by the additional district and sessions court. In the same year, 1,747 civil cases were instituted and 1,507 of them were disposed of. 

In the sessions courts, proceedings of 45 cases under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotoropic Substances Act (NDPS) were started in 2018 and 27 were duly completed by the end of the same year. Meanwhile, 251 cases under the NDPS were still pending along with 68 cases of rape.
