Ranchi: Another shocking incident of medical apathy surfaced as two infants lost their lives at a government hospital. The infants allegedly lost their lives after an immunisation vaccine was administered to them. The incident took place in the Giridih district.

The deceased infants were born on May 19. Following the deaths, the families of the deceased resorted to violence against the doctors and the staff members. One of the deceased was from Giridih while the other was from the Mufassil area.

Civil Surgeon of the Giridih Sadar Hospital, Dr Ramrekha Prasad stated that the vaccines were administered to the deceased under a routine immunisation programme. The deceased were not the only infants who were administered the vaccines.

After being vaccinated, the deceased allegedly faced medical complications after which they were admitted to the Sick Newborn Care Unit. The infants were later referred to Ranchi.

While talking to the Hindustan Times, Prasad stated that after the families of the deceased refused to take them to Ranchi, they continued the treatment of the deceased. When the infants passed away, the families did not allege medical negligence and took the infants.

However, in the evening, the families returned to the hospital. Prasad stated that developing a fever is a normal reaction to vaccines. He alleged that no other injection apart from the  vaccines was administered to the infants.

The doctor who allegedly administered the injections was identified as Dr Govind Prasad. Govind alleged that the deceased were admitted in the NICU after which they were referred to another  hospital. No complaint was filed by the family of the deceased.
