Chennai: In a case of medical apathy that bordered barbaric behaviour, a baby’s head was separated from its torso during the delivery procedure at a primary health centre. The torso of the baby, which was stuck inside the womb, was removed later.

The perturbing incident occurred at a primary health centre in Koovathur near Chennai and the relatives of the patient claim that a nurse did the delivery instead of a doctor, highlighting the sad state of affairs in the region when it comes to healthcare facilities.

The mother of the child, identified as Bommidala, was also in serious condition as her health worsened soon after the botched delivery and she was taken to Chengalpet hospital later.

The hospital authorities claim that as per the initial reports they had received, the health centre showed it as an intrauterine death. The baby had to be removed to save the life of the woman and the staff acted in urgency.

The Directorate has sought more reports from the health centre and an investigation is on. Moreover, a case has also been filed at the local police station regarding the same.

It is truly shocking that despite such incidents being reported from all over the country, there is little or no action against the party at fault due to loopholes safeguarding the erring medical authorities and staff.

Similar incidents have been reported from Rajasthan where botched medical procedures have in the recent past resulted in the death of unborn children. The authorities need to address this issue with urgency as human life can’t be treated with such apathy.
