Gujarat: Youths throw COVID-19 guidelines to wind, hold birthday celebration; 18 arrested

Bapunagar police in Gujarat took action against the accused after taking cognisance of a video that went viral on social media.

Ahmedabad: In yet another case of shocking negligence, a group of youth held a birthday party celebration throwing all COVID-19 guidelines to the wind.

According to a report in Indian Express, police have arrested 18 people in connection with the violation of the pandemic guidelines.

In the video which has gone viral, a man could be seen cutting cakes with a sword during the birthday party.

Police said the incident took place on July 3 night when a man identified as 22-year-old Suraj Singh Purohit threw a birthday in the parking lot of Viratnagar municipality office at Bapunagar. 

Around 20 people attended the birthday party where Purohit was purportedly seen cutting cakes with a sword.

The police took cognisance of the incident after the video surfaced on social media as accused allegedly flouted COVID-19 pandemic guidelines. 

"We have booked Suraj Singh Purohit and 20 others under the Disaster Management Act and sections 188 (disobedience to order given by public servant) and 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of a disease) under the Indian Penal Code," the report quoted a police officer from Bapunagar police station as saying.

Police said all 18 persons were arrested on Saturday and granted bail on Sunday.
