Bangalore: A police complaint was filed against an unknown person by residents of Whitefield area in Bengaluru for axing a '100-year-old' banyan tree. As per the residents, this incident could not happen overnight as the tree was old and massive. On Friday, locals noticed the tree was missing but their efforts to find the culprit failed which is when they turned to the police.

However, a rising volunteer of the locality told Bangalore Mirror that locals are suspecting a different set of reasons behind the tree's disappearance. Some stated that it could have been cut intentionally while others claimed that it could have been cut off by forest officials. Also, some residents suspected that it could be the handiwork of a nearby shopkeeper.

Soon after the incident, the volunteer on Tuesday filed an FIR at the Whitefield Police Station. A police officer said that an investigation has been launched into the matter and they would soon find the culprit.

Moreover, residents of the area are taking precautionary measures as they do not want such incidents to occur around Whitefield. They have now started marking trees which they believe are under threat when new buildings come up. Locals have also planned to carry out a tree census with help from environmentalist Vijay Nishanth.

In a similar case from last year, sandalwood trees were stolen from Raj Bhavan compound, the Pune residence of Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao. A complaint was filed immediately by the gardeners in this regard.
