Bhopal: As the rest of the country awaited Congress party's decision to name a Chief Minister for the state of Madhya Pradesh where they staked a claim to form the government in the wake of the recent state assembly elections, a crime spree was reported from the state's capital city of Bhopal. According to residents, a gang of masked sword-weilding bikers ran amok on the streets of Bhopal on Thursday night.

During their run which lasted for over eight kilometres, the assailants smashed the windscreens of as many as 70 cars. Armed with rods, sticks and swords, the gang of six men on three bikes went about smashing vehicles and threatening passerby across upscale localities such as Kamla Nagar, Shyamla Hills and TT Nagar.

Footage recovered by police from CCTV cameras installed along the route taken by the bikers shows the bikers smashing every single vehicle they could lay their eyes on while threatening and abusing passerby at the same time. The gang's hoolaganism continued unchecked across the jurisdiction of three police stations. However, no arrests have been made in connection to the matter as of yet.

A senior police official said that a bulk of the city police was deployed at the Congress office on Link Road 1 where the name of the new chief minister was to be announced. The goons took this as a window of opportunity to destroy and pillage as per their choosing, added the official.

Angry residents registered an official complaint with the Kamla Nagar police station and said they are hopeful that city police will nab the assailants. Superintendent of police (SP), South, Rahul Kumar Lodha said that Bhopal police is investigating the matter as one considered to be top priority.
