Bhiwani: A woman in Haryana's Bhiwani consumed poison after a school denied admission to her daughter. Allegedly, the woman's daughter had been sexually harassed by a teacher and after she complained about the same, the school expelled her. After the authorities and bureaucrats in the district did not offer their help, the woman lost hope and consumed poison at the office of the District Education Officer (DEO). The incident took place on Thursday.

After consuming poison, the woman reached the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the office of the District Commissioner. The woman was taken to the hospital by the workers employed at the SP's office. Necessary treatment was administered to the woman at the hospital and she is said to be recovering. The woman has accused the District Education Officer (DEO) of inaction.

How it happened

Around two months ago, the class 12 student had alleged that her teacher had been sexually harassing her. The student had also said that the teacher used to talk inappropriately with her on the phone. The headmaster of the school allegedly tried to shield the accused after the allegations against the teacher surfaced.

Following this, a complaint was registered against the accused at the women's police station and he was arrested. According to an investigation, the director of the school was not involved in the incident. After the complaint was registered, the authorities fired the complainant's parents who were fourth-class workers at the same school.

The director of the school allegedly expelled the student by saying that the environment of the school would be affected if she continued studying there. The complainant's brother, a student of Class 4 was also expelled from the school, citing similar reasons.

The parents of the complainant said that they had approached politicians and bureaucrats but they turned a deaf ear towards them. In an attempt to get justice for their daughter, the parents went to the Education Officer's house. While the authorities kept making promises that they will take strict action, nothing was done to help the complainant and her family.

The police sprung into action after the woman consumed poison and was admitted to the hospital. An investigation revealed that the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) had directed the school to grant admission to the complainant. A CWC member and an officer of the district education department had also visited the school. Despite this, the school denied admission to the student. The education officer has assured that necessary action will be taken with regards to the incident.
