Thiruvananthapuram: The nuns demanding rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal's arrest have been issued yet another threatening letter by a congregation. Earlier this year, the five nuns living with the rape survivor nun to express their support for her were issued transfer orders by the Missionaries of Jesus asking them to shift from Kerala to Bihar, Punjab and other states.

In the most recent letter sent by the Mother Superior to Sister Lucy Kalappura, the nun was asked to "change her mind and attitude sincerely". Failure to adhere to these instructions will invite strict action, said the letter. It also mentioned that the congregation had summoned Sister Kalappura on two occasions in the past to appear before it and explain her actions.

The nuns have been living with the survivor nun at a convent in Kerala's Kuravilangad to express their solidarity with her. However, they have been receiving letters from various congregations asking them to refrain from holding press conferences or speaking out publicly against rape-accused former Bishop of Jalandhar Franco Mulakkal.

Protesting nuns

Mulakkal was accused by a nun from the Missionaries of Jesus of confining her to a convent in Kerala and raping her on several occasions between 2014 and 2016. Based on her complaint, Mulakkal was investigated by a SIT and sent to Pala sub-jail where he was kept for three weeks before being granted interim bail by the Kerala High Court. Mulakkal's lawyers had argued that he would not exercise his clout to influence the conclusion of the investigation into allegations against him.
