Mumbai: As Mumbai battles matching healthcare facilities in comparison to rising cases of COVID-19 witnessed in the city, the administration is planning to get healthcare staff from green districts of the state to Mumbai.

In Maharashtra, green districts are where fewer cases of patients tested COVID-19 positive are observed. Earlier this week, a batch of 45 doctors from Wardha assisted in treating COVID-19 patients at Seven Hills hospital in Andheri. Buses were arranged to get these doctors to Mumbai.

Doctor Shivkumar from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha, who was also one of the doctors that assisted with the healthcare in COVID-19 dedicated Seven Hills hospital said, "We travelled by bus for close to 24 hours to reach Mumbai. We felt scared to work but we continued to provide assistance."

Another doctor, Neeraj Pethe added that they were given orientation on how to treat patients requiring care for COVID-19. "Doctors with a specific set of skills who can give anaesthesia and medicine were posted in ICU and HDUs. We treated patients who were stable and not stable as well. The situation in Mumbai is different from Wardha. We were happy to assist."

Officials said that these batches of doctors will also be able to provide relief to Mumbai based doctors who have been working since the past 2 months.

Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation while speaking to Mirror Now, said, " Focus is to get doctors from medical colleges of green districts of the state including Beed, Latur to help doctors in Mumbai. Their services will be used in jumbo facilities of the city and hospitals. Doctors would be rotated after every 15 days so that they can also quarantine themselves after providing healthcare."

Last month, health minister Rajesh Tope had said, "There is a vacancy of 17,337 healthcare staff in the public health department in the state. Also, 10,000 posts in the medical education department of the state are vacant. The state will conduct a drive to fill these vacancies."

State officials told Mirror Now that about 3000 additional doctors have been trained to handle patients related to COVID-19 care.
