Shreyas Iyer on Thursday hit the headlines after his stunning century against Sikkim while playing for Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. Iyer slammed a monstrous 147 in just 55 deliveries as he shattered Rishabh Pant’s record of highest ever T20 score by an Indian player. Not only that, with his quickfire ton, Iyer also broke another couple of records as the Mumbai-born batsman continues to knock the door of the Indian cricket team since last playing for the Men in Blue in an ODI match against South Africa on February 16, 2018.

Iyer’s humongous 147 not only shattered Pant’s record of highest ever T20 score by an Indian player, but the 24-year-old batter also smashed 15 sixes en route to his cracking ton. Interestingly, the record of hitting most sixes by an Indian in a T20 match also belonged to Pant, who had earlier dispatched 12 sixes while playing for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh in a domestic match in 2018.

Mumbai started their innings torridly as they lost both the openers - Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw – for 11 and 10 runs respectively. However, Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav settled down at the crease and stitched a massive 213-run partnership while taking Mumbai to 235-3 from 22-2.

Mumbai finished their 20-over quota by scoring a huge 258-4 but what stood out in the entire innings was the brilliant partnership between Iyer and Yadav. The 213-run stand was the highest ever third-wicket partnership in a T20 game as the surpassed Alex Hales and AB de Villiers’ 184-run partnership in the Bangladesh Premier League 2019.

So, Iyer’s sensational knock not only brought him in the limelight again but the knock also shattered three major records. After the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, Iyer will be seen playing for the revamped Delhi Capitals side in the Indian Premier League 2019, starting from 23rd March onwards.
