TRENTON – A city man killed a relative in a dispute over women, police sources said.

Horace Jones, 34, of Ewing, is accused of gunning down his cousin Tayvion Jones, 18, of Trenton. Tayvion Jones was shot in the chest in the kitchen of his Oakland Street home around 12:30 a.m., prosecutors said.

Horace Jones was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, and prosecutors announced the charges Tuesday morning.

Police sources said the men were feuding over women when Horace Jones went over to the house and let off a round from outside the home, catching his cousin in the chest.

The petty squabble now has Horace Jones charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

The prosecutor’s office is moving to detain Horace Jones, who is locked up at the Mercer County jail. His detention hearing is slated for Friday.

Investigators are still trying to reconcile competing stories that they’ve received from the Joneses family members.

Half the family says the two men are cousins while others disputed that they’re related, according to officials with knowledge of the matter.

The murder of Tayvion Jones was one of two that occurred within hours of each other Monday.

The second slaying of Antwuan Bowens, 44, happened more than five hours later. Bowens was shot to death around 9 a.m. on Daymond Street.

The murder happened in the same part of the city of Saturday’s triple shooting that claimed Robert Smith, 38, of Trenton, and wounded ex-Bloods leader Earlie Harrell, 44, and a 19-year-old Hamilton man.

No arrests have been announced in those slayings.
