Patiala, June 11 

A two-day international conference on Asia’s development experiences, organised by the Centre for Development Economics and Innovation Studies, commenced at Punjabi University here today.   

The event has been organised in collaboration with the Association of Asia Scholars, New Delhi.

Delegates from various countries, including Bangladesh, South Korea, France, Japan and Canada, and others are taking part in the conference. Dr Ram Kumar Phuyal, member, National Planning Commission, Government of Nepal, was the chief guest.

Phuyal said despite Asia’s recent growth and development, issues such as poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and un-sustainable development were still highly prevalent, especially in south Asia. “There is a need for new policy initiatives to tackle the problems. Socially inclusive growth can transform economies and the societies,” he said.

Prof Sukhpal Singh, former director general, CRRID, introduced a journal — Millenial Asia — which has been started 

by the Association of Asia Scholars, published by Sage. Prof Lakhwinder Singh Gill, Head, Department of Economics at the university, discussed the development and growth of the Asian region in the past 50 years.
