Panjab University, all city colleges affiliated to the university and Punjab Engineering College have been closed, as a precautionary measure in view of the threat of Covid-19.
Following the notifications issued by the governments of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and the UT Administration regarding the closure of educational institutions as a measure to prevent pandemic conditions arising out of Covid-19, the PU authorities decided to suspend the classes till March 31.
The teaching, including personal contact programmes, in the teaching departments, regional centres, institutes, constituent colleges, affiliated colleges in Punjab as well as the UT would remain suspended.
UT Health Secretary Arun Gupta said all government as well as private colleges affiliated to PU would remain closed till March 31.
Students and research scholars of Panjab University have been advised to vacate the hostels. They have been advised to remain stationed in their respective hometowns and avoid any travel. All internal examinations, including mid-semester tests, evaluation/assessment stand postponed. All functions such as seminars, conferences, symposia, workshops, any group activity and gatherings shall also stand postponed, the PU authorities said.
The exceptions at PEC
PEC has been decided to suspend all classes with immediate effect for an indefinite period. In an email sent to the faculty and students, Dheeraj Sanghi, Director, PEC, stated: “We will be reviewing the situation regularly and announce the opening date when it is relatively safer to do so. The semester will be extended by as many days as the duration of suspension of classes. All students to vacate hostels by the noon of March 17. The only exception to this will be students of MTech second year, PhD students and those pupils whose homes are outside India. Second-year MTech students and PhD students are expected to continue doing their research/project work.” It was also informed that the third-year BTech students, who are away on internship, should follow the guidelines of their host organisations. As per the directive of the Punjab Government, classes at Chandigarh University will be suspended from March 19 to 31. However, events, placement drives or any other important activities will continue as per scheduled.
