As many as 40 villages in the district have been declared flood-sensitive during monsoon. The number of such villages this year has risen sharply in comparison to previous years, mainly due more residential and farming areas in the catchment area of the Yamuna near the eastern border of the district.

At a meeting held recently to review the measures being taken to prevent flooding, a spokesperson of the district authorities claimed that several measures had been taken to tackle the possibility of flooding in the river in its catchment areas. He said five control rooms had been set up for calls and complaints regarding flooding and the department concerned had spent over Rs 10.5 crore on flood measures this year.

“While drains and nullahs in the affected areas have been cleaned, several new weirs have been constructed to stop the surge of water on the banks of the river,” said an official of the irrigation department. The Chief Minister had also chaired a meeting over the issue a fortnight ago and it was decided that Indian Air Force’s help might be sought in case of severe situation, it is claimed.

The sensitive villages include Basantpur, Agwanpur,Kidawali, Lalpur, Dadasiya, Mahwatpur, Bahskola, Dadhar,Kanwara, Rajpur Kalan, Shikagoh, Amipur, Chirsi, Tilori Khadar, Maujabad, Nachauli, Fulera, Dungharpur, Kabulpur Patti,Mohna, Sahupura Khadar, Latifpur, Chhainsa, Dulhepur, Shahjahanpur, Fajjupur, Adwa, Chandpur, Mothuka, Nangla, Chandpur, Imamudinpur, Akbarpur, Shekhpur, Gudasan, Gadi Begumpur, Groda, Dalelgarh, Patti Mahtab, Patti Parvarish and Manjhawali.

Control rooms have been set up in the office of the Faridabad SDM (0129-2227868), District Revenue Officer (0129- 2227937), Ballbagarh SDM (0129-2304400), Badkhal SDM (0129-2422090), and the DC office (0129- 2227272).

The budget spent on the measures includes Rs 51.92 lakh on checking soil erosion in the catchment area, Rs 2.89 crore on the construction of weirs and drains in Badkhal and Ankhir village at a cost of Rs 3.69 crore and bridges on the Gonchhi drain at a cost of Rs 3.45 crore.
