Punjab, Haryana to see below-normal rain until September 4

NEW DELHI: Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are likely to get less-than-normal rain until September 4, the Indian Meteorological Department on Friday.

Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are likely to get less-than-normal rain until September 4, the Indian Meteorological Department on Friday.

The IMD said in its weekly forecast that the country, except some central, northeastern and coastal regions, will receive below normal rainfall until August 28.

Odisha, some northern parts of Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tripura and Mizoram are like to witness excess rain.

Normal rainfall can also be expected over east Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Between August 29 and September 4, excess rainfall is likely over Konkan, Goa, east Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and northeastern states. Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, central Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka and Kerala will witness normal rainfall, but the rest will see below normal rain.

Heavy rainfall over the western Himalayan region of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh witnessed heavy rainfall and floods. The country received 63.8 mm rains against the normal of 58.1 mm—10 per cent more than the LPA. However, northwest India received 75.4 mm rains against the normal of 46.3 mm—an excess of 63 per cent.

Odisha, east Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana also saw fairly widespread and very intense rainfall.
