The Men’s Ministry of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Troy was busy Saturday doing its part to help keep Troy clean.

Kenneth Jones, chairman of the Men’s Ministry at St. Paul, said the Men’s Ministry is committed to community outreach and also to donating time for fundraising for their church.

“The members of the Men’s Ministry realize the importance of keeping our streets clean,” Jones said. “Not only does it make our city look better, it makes us feel good about our community.  If other people see us out picking up trash, it might be encouragement for them to do the same or, at least, think twice before throwing trash down.”

Jones said the Men’s Ministry of St. Paul is looking forward to being a part of the citywide cleanup project in March and April.

“We’ve also got a community project that we want to flesh out,” he said. “We would like to acquire permission to go into the nursing homes and play and sing gospel music for the residents and read Bible scriptures to them. That’s something that we are working on and hope that we will be able to do. We want to do something for all our citizens and, certainly, for our senior citizens that have done so much for the community over their lifetimes.”

Jones said the Men’s Ministry was on the campus of Troy University last Saturday when the students were moving in for the fall semester.

“We were around the dorms passing out cold water to those that were moving in,” he said. “We enjoyed doing it and they all seemed to appreciate what we were doing.”

Jones said the Men’s Ministry also has plans to offer free haircuts for unprivileged kids and also school supplies.

“We want to take some of these kids to basketball games at Troy University,” he said. “We’ll have several fundraisers to help with funding our projects.”

Presently, the Men’s Ministry has 26 members, with a core group that is involved in the more physical activities.

“We have a lot of plans and are looking forward to doing all we can to support and improve our communities and our city,” he said.
