Walmart’s Robert Benton Crowned Grand Champion in Delaware
HARRINGTON, Del. — Robert Benton, a driver for Walmart Transportation, won the Grand Champion prize at the Delaware Truck Driving Championships on May 18.
Benton, who placed first in the 5-Axle category, has triumphed in his class for the past two years, ascending to the national championships each time. He won the state’s Sleeper Berth class in 2017 and 2018.

A total of five Walmart drivers participated in the competition, and each came away with an award. Johnny Wiltbank placed first in the Straight Truck class and Paul Marks placed first in the Sleeper Berth group. Leroy Morgan Jr. placed second in the 4-Axle class and Gregory Ringgold came in third in the Tank Truck division.

2019 Preview

Field: More than 30 truck drivers are expected to compete in nine categories.
Preview: 2018 Grand Champion Louis Lockard of FedEx Freight is back to defend his title as well as his 3-Axle victory. Robert Benton of Walmart Transportation will be back as well. The state Sleeper class champ was the state's top finisher at nationals last year, placing No. 7 in Sleeper.
This year is the 80th anniversary of the Delaware Motor Transport Association, and the 44th annual Delaware Truck Driving Championship.

Delaware's Louis Lockard Likes Variety in Competitions but Shows Consistency in Winning
Lockard
For Delaware Grand Champion Louis Lockard of FedEx Freight, there is nothing better than being behind the wheel of a truck. After finishing first in the 3-Axle class at Delaware’s truck driving championships, Lockard, of Elkton, Md., has earned his fourth trip to nationals Aug. 15-18 in Columbus, Ohio.
Lockard’s 18-year career was inspired by the truck-driving stories he heard from his brother, John. “I started out on the docks and got interested in being able to get out and move trailers and stuff like that. I asked if there was something available and they said yes,” Lockard said. “I went through school and haven’t looked back since.”
Benton
Since leaving the docks, Lockard, now 57, has racked up around 1.8 million safety miles and has competed at the state tournament 10 times.
He placed No. 41 in the 3-Axle at the 2018 National Truck Driving Championships.
Robert Benton of Walmart Transportation was the state's top finisher at nationals, placing No. 7 in Sleeper.
