Defense steps up, Holt edges Autaugaville

AUTAUGAVILLE - The Holt Ironmen picked up their first win since the 2015 season with an 18-16 victory Friday night in high school football action over Autaugaville.

Senior Jamonte Burrell forced a fumble near the end of the game to secure the victory.

Holt quarterback Tahj’e Driver threw for 156 yards and rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Jamaures Hood also scored a rushing touchdown.

Defensively, Jared Jennings had 12 tackles and Dayton O’Neal came up with a key interception.

The Ironmen (1-1) host Oakman next Friday to begin Class 3A, Region 4 region play. Holt has won a combined three games - four including a forfeit win last season - in the past three years.

Holy Spirit 56,

Vincent 22

TUSCALOOSA - A.J. Lee rushed for 122 yards and scored two touchdowns, one rushing and another on a punt return, to lead the Holy Spirit Saints to a lopsided victory over Vincent.

Lee scored on a 39-yard run and also returned a punt 67 yards for another score.

Sam Contorno added touchdown runs of 10 and 3 yards for the Saints, while Mason Mulinax scored on a 1-yard run and threw touchdown passes to Jaylon Stevenson and Joseph Bishop.

Stevenson finished with eight receptions for 89 yards.

Holy Spirit (2-0) travels to Ellwood Christian next Friday night.

Central 58,

Greene County 34

EUTAW - Central junior Javonta Leatherwood rushed for 406 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries to lead the Falcons to victory.

Jakel Hill scored on a 70-yard run for Greene County, while Keke Spencer caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Caron Coleman.

Central (1-1) travels to Jemison next Friday, while Greene County (0-1) hosts Carbon Hill.

Lamar County 35,

Sulligent 7

SULLIGENT - Ric Rogers completed 11 of 17 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns as the Lamar County Bulldogs rolled over Sulligent.

Rogers threw touchdown passes to C.J. Wise, Bo Spencer and Taye Buchanan.

Jose Rendon returned an interception 30 yards for another Bulldog touchdown, while Buchanan added a 13-yard scoring run.

Lamar County (1-1) travels to Hale County next Friday night, while Sulligent (1-1) travels to Sumiton Christian.

Hale County 22,

Sipsey Valley 8

MOUNDVILLE - The Hale County Wildcats won their season-opener against Sipsey Valley.

Peyton Ingram led the Sipsey Valley offense with 130 yards rushing on 15 carries, while Tyler Hammer led the defense with eight tackles and two assists.

Hale County (1-0) hosts Lamar County next Friday, while Sipsey Valley hosts West Blocton.

Pelham 42,

Bibb County 12

CENTREVILLE - Xavier Lankford scored two touchdowns as Pelham remained unbeaten with an easy victory over the Bibb County Choctaws.

Lankford scored on runs of 1 and 15 yards, while Matthew Rye added a 1-yard touchdown run and threw a 32-yard scoring pass to Dylan Peterson.

Jesse Collums scored both of Bibb County's touchdowns on runs of 1 and 2 yards in the fourth quarter.

Bibb County (1-1) travels to Demopolis next Friday.

Pickens Academy 8

MONTGOMERY - On Thursday, Jon Wesley Rye had 49 rushing yards on 15 carries and Clarke Noland had 45 yards on 10 carries to lead the way for Pickens Academy.

Also for the Pirates, Austin Goodman had two catches for 80 yards and William Parker was 4 of 8 passing for 100 yards. Parker scored the only touchdown for Pickens Academy on a 1-yard in the 4th quarter.

Pickens Academy will play at Meadowview next Friday in Selma.
