The 2019 Minnesota high school girls hockey state tournament slate is set, and it’s no surprise who’s on top in Class 2A.
That’s two-time defending state champ Edina, which bested previously top-ranked Blake 3-2 in Friday’s Class 2A, Section 6 title game. Edina’s quarterfinal opponent? East Ridge, a first-time state qualifier.
Andover is the No. 2 seed after surviving a thrilling section final against Forest Lake that went to overtime. Brainerd is the third seed and will face unseeded White Bear Lake, which upset Hill-Murray in the Section 4 final Friday. The Pioneers had qualified for each of the previous six state tournaments.
Warroad is the top seed in Class A for the second time in as many seasons. It has a date with St. Paul United, which toppled South St. Paul in the Section 4 final, in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. The quarterfinal will mark the third time in four years the schools have faced off at state.
Breck, the defending state champ which beat Warroad in overtime of last year’s title game, is again seeded second.
The entire winner’s bracket for each tournament will be played at the Xcel Energy Center. The semifinals and finals for each class will be televised on KSTC Channel 45.
