A gas leak in downtown St. Paul halted light-rail service for about an hour Tuesday morning.

About 25 people were evacuated from the site of the gas leak, the building at 401 E. Fourth St. — which is between Sibley and Wacouta streets — as a precaution, said Randy Fordice, Xcel Energy spokesman.

The gas was shut off and people were allowed to return to the building.

A contractor apparently cut a pipe inside the building, Fordice said. The fire department was notified at 10:10 a.m.

Green Line trains were not running at the Union Depot and Central stations due to the gas leak and people were directed to use buses until service resumed.
