A woman who fled the scene of an accident Friday on St. Paul’s Grand Avenue left behind a rather helpful clue to her identity.

“Did you get the license plate?” Golden Fig Fine Foods owner Laurie Crowell asked her employees when she learned of the crash. “One of the girls held up the actual license plate.”

About 1 p.m., the woman, who Crowell said appeared to be attempting to park in front of Bruegger’s Bagels next door, hit the car parked in front of her, drove up onto the curb and hit a heavy bench, wedging it between the gas meter and the building, sending potted flowers flying. No one was injured.

“She was very flustered by what happened,” Crowell said. “She said that her car just seemed to lose control.”

Millie Adelsheim, co-owner of Mischief Toy Store a few doors down, had just stepped out of her store and was on her way to the bank when she saw the car on the sidewalk.

She said the woman, who appeared to be no older than 20, had a male passenger in the white, four-door sedan she was driving. The woman backed up, hit something else and hopped out, Adelsheim said.

“Her bumper was falling off at this point,” said Adelsheim, who snapped a photo of the incident. “She was mad at me for filming her.”

Crowell said the woman got back into her car and drove off down South Avon Street. Xcel Energy was called to check on the gas meter, but found no issues.

St. Paul police said they were called to the scene about 1 p.m., but no further information was available on the driver.
