The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified two St. Paul police officers on Friday — one whom a man drove into on Tuesday and another who fired at the suspect.

Police do not believe the suspect, Salvador Torres Garza, 19, was injured.

Prosecutors charged him Tuesday with first-degree assault involving use of deadly force against a peace officer. He had not been found as of Friday.

Officer Mitchell Mountain bounced off the hood of the stolen vehicle that Torres Garza, of St. Paul, was driving on Tuesday about 2 a.m., according to the criminal complaint and the BCA. Mountain sustained minor injuries.

Officer Arturo Lopez fired his gun at the vehicle.

Torres Garza has multiple warrants out for his arrest. On Tuesday, police looking for Torres Garza spotted a stolen Dodge Journey in an alley near Winter Street and Capitol Boulevard.

Lopez directed Torres Garza to exit the vehicle, but he drove “rapidly” toward Mountain, according to the complaint and the BCA. After the vehicle struck Mountain, Lopez fired “multiple rounds” as Torres Garza sped away, the court document continued.

The BCA is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Body cameras captured portions of the incident.

Police found the stolen vehicle abandoned a short time later. As there was no blood inside, police do not believe Torres Garza was shot.

The officers, who both have been St. Paul police employees for two years, were placed on administrative leave, which is standard in such cases.

Mountain was injured in another incident earlier this month. After a man punched a St. Paul officer in the face and ran away, Mitchell was trying to get the suspect into custody on Aug. 3 and the man bit his forearm, according to the criminal complaint in that case.
