Czech Film Festival Returns To Little Rock

Czech That Film Festival

Film fans in Little Rock will have the opportunity to watch some movies from the Czech Republic this weekend as a part of the Czech That Film festival. The event, hosted by the Czech Honorary Consulate in Little Rock, includes partners like the Arkansas Cinema Society and the Central Arkansas Library System’s Ron Robinson Theater.

The festival itself is an international one, taking place in 15 different cities across the United States and Canada, according to festival’s website. Little Rock is one of the smaller cities hosting the event, with some cities showing more films than others.

The Little Rock lineup consists of five different films, with the first one screening Friday night and the rest on Saturday. Lenka Horakova with the Czech Honorary Consulate in Little Rock says Friday’s film will include an appearance from the director of the movie.

"That’s a neat thing because the audience will get to talk to him. We’ll do a Q&A after the film and they’ll get to visit with him afterwards as well," Horakova said. The films are a variety of genres, including some based off of historical events.

"'Golden Sting' is a drama that takes place during the second World War and the events afterwards and another film 'Jan Palach' is also based on a historical event of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968," Horakova said. The event itself, according to Horakova, was established to raise the interest and profile of current Czech film.

"It provides an opportunity for American enthusiasts of global cinema to experience successful, new Czech films," Horakova said. While Czech film may have a lot of similarities to American cinema, Horokova does believe films from the Czech Republic do offer a unique point of view.

"It gives you a glimpse of life in central Europe, in the Czech Republic, and so from the cultural perspective, I think that’s very interesting," Horokova said.

Information on the festival, including film synopses, showtimes and ticket information can be found at the Arkansas Cinema Society’swebsite.
