MANCHESTER — Portions of Interstate 293 and Route 101 in Manchester and Bedford were closed early Thursday as emergency personnel responded to reports of two crashes during the morning commute.
According to state police, around 7:30 a.m. Thursday Trooper Ryan Hajjar responded to a report of a multi-vehicle accident along I-293 northbound in Manchester near the Merrimack River Bridge. Upon arrival, Hajjar determined there were two separate three-car crashes in the same area.
According to state police, Hajjar reported finding a 2014 Nissan Rogue resting on a bridge railing with significant damage.
A preliminary investigation determined the driver of the Nissan Rogue, identified as Gilman Chamberlain, 27, of Raymond, was heading north on I-293 when traffic in front of him suddenly stopped for a three-car crash that had just occurred ahead of him.
According to state police, Chamberlain told troopers he didn’t realize traffic was stopping so abruptly and was unable to stop in time. His vehicle hit the back of another Nissan Rogue, driven by Nancy Fraser, 64, of Manchester.
That second Nissan Rogue then sideswiped a third vehicle, driven by Brianna Allard, 40, of Portsmouth.
According to state police, Chamberlain complained of chest pain and was treated at the scene by Bedford Fire and EMS personnel.
Fraser was also treated on scene by Bedford Fire and EMS, then transported to the Elliot Hospital with a head injury. Allard was uninjured.
The operators of the initial three-car crash that Chamberlain came upon were uninjured, state police said. At the same time these two crashes were being investigated, state troopers also responded to an additional three-car crash along Route 101 westbound heading toward the Everett Turnpike. Drivers involved in this crash were also uninjured, state police said.
I-293 northbound in the area of the Merrimack River Bridge was closed to traffic for approximately 45 minutes by Bedford Fire and the New Hampshire state police.
According to state police, an initial investigation appears traffic congestion and following too closely were contributing factors in all three crashes.
The accidents remain under remain investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact Hajjar at Ryan.Hajjar@dos.nh.gov.
