After his controversial Golden Globes hosting, Ricky Gervais defends his humor

Ricky Gervais is responding to the haters.

Days after his controversial jokes at the Golden Globes Sunday, the actor and comedian, 58, took to Twitter to defend his humor.

"1. Simply pointing out whether someone is left or right wing isn't winning the argument. 2. If a joke is good enough, it can be enjoyed by anyone. 3. It's not all about you. 4. Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right," he tweeted, without directly mentioning the award show.

He also commented on his jokes in an earlier tweet.

"I always knew that there were morons in the world that took jokes seriously, but I'm surprised that some journalists do. Surely, understanding stuff is pretty fundamental to their job, isn't it? Just makes it funnier though, I guess," he said.

It was Gervais' fifth time hosting the Globes. He delivered jokes about Baby Yoda and Joe Pesci, Felicity Huffman making license plates, "Cats," Martin Scorsese's height and movies about pedophiles.

There were a few chuckles during the broadcast, but even fans of Gervais' harsh brand of humor were likely disappointed. There weren't many barbs to his sharp humor, merely a few jabs at Apple and political celebrities.

His performance was significant, however, since Gervais has promised that it will be his final show.

This isn't the first time the British comic's jokes have offended. He stepped into controversy on Twitter last month, making a joke that critics found transphobic. Far from apologizing, Gervais carried on.

"The more people are offended by a joke, particularly on Twitter, the funnier I find it. And the angrier the tweet, the more chance of me using it and turning it to laughs and cash," he tweeted previously about his work. "PC culture isn’t killing comedy. It’s driving it. As it always did."
