Missouri police officer fatally shot by person trying to cash bad check, police say

A Missouri police officer was fatally shot while responding to a call about a customer at a market trying to cash a bad check, according to multiple reports. 

The officer, identified during a  news conference as Michael Langsdorf, was fatally shot after responding to the 4:30 p.m. call, North County Police Cooperative Chief John Buchannan told reporters Sunday.

Buchannan said Langsdorf had been with the organization for about three months that a suspect was in custody. A weapon also was recovered, Buchannan said. KSDK-TV  in St. Louis reported that Langsdorf was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the person who tried to cash the bad check is the suspect in the shooting. 

Multiple outlets reported that the incident happened at a food market in Wellston, Missouri. The North County Police Cooperative serves seven municipalities in the northern part of St. Louis County, including Wellston. There are about 60 officers in the cooperative working alongside civilians, according to the organization's website.

Buchannan added that there will be a  news conference Monday.

The Officer Down Memorial Page, a nonprofit that honors fallen law-enforcement officers, posted that Langsdorf is survived by a fiancee, two children and his parents. According to Langsdorf's memorial page, he was 40 years old. 

According to the Post-Dispatch, Langsdorf was formerly an officer for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, where he worked for 17 years.
