What you need to know about the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League restart
The 2019-20 UEFA Champions League season will conclude in August starting with the Round of 16, where the competition stood when it was halted in March due to the global outbreak of the coronavirus.
Four Round of 16 second-leg games have yet to be played, and will take place Friday and Saturday. Those four games (Juventus-Lyon; Manchester City-Real Madrid; Bayern Munich-Chelsea; FC Barcelona-Napoli) will be hosted in the original venues before the tournament shifts to Lisbon, Portugal, where the quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be held.
Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig already have advanced to the quarterfinals. Because of the pandemic, the quarterfinals and semifinals were changed from two legs to one-match knockouts.
Champions League on CBS
Television rights in the U.S. for the Champions League changed hands during the coronavirus pandemic. In July, CBS took over the television rights from TBS. CBS Sports Network will air two Round of 16 games and the Champions League final on Aug. 23. All games will be available on CBS All Access. The remainder of the Europa League, UEFA’s No. 2 club tournament, will be entirely streamed.
Univision Deportes will provide Spanish-language coverage of all the remaining Champions League games.
Liverpool has been eliminated
Despite a historic Premier League championship season, defending UEFA Champions League titlists Liverpool weren't able to get to the quarterfinals in this year's competition.
If fact, both of last year's finalists — the aforementioned Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur — were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig, respectively.
Instead, Chelsea and Manchester City are left to carry the torch for the English Premier League. American Christian Pulisic, who had a remarkable run for Chelsea after the restart, has been ruled out of Saturday's game against Bayern Munich with a hamstring strain.
Bayern or PSG could win a 'treble'
Here are the clubs that won Europe's "Big 5" leagues for the 2019-20 season:
- Bundesliga: Bayern Munich
- La Liga: Real Madrid
- Ligue 1: Paris Saint-Germain
- Premier League: Liverpool
- Serie A: Juventus
Bayern Munich (which also won the DFB-Pokal) and Paris Saint-Germain (which also won the Coupe de France) can win the continental treble with a UEFA Champions League title after winning their respective domestic league and club cup competitions. FC Barcelona was the last club to accomplish this, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League in 2015. Bayern Munich won the continental treble in 2013.
