Fargo police officers warn incoming NDSU students of loud parties

The annual migration is underway around the North Dakota State University campus as students move into dorms, houses, and apartments.

Another annual tradition welcoming college students is the warning from the Fargo Police Department on loud parties.

For 20 years Mark Tumbo has been calling his house near NDSU home.

“All the kids have been great around here that moved in,” Tumbo said.

Tumbo said living so close has its perks, one has been that the house’s value has tripled since he bought it.

“Housing in Fargo has gone way up again after the crash in 2008, where everything dropped,” Tumbo said.

But there’s also a downside to his location. In 2017, we reported on surveillance video capturing NDSU students tossing trash and removing yard signs at homes near campus.

On Friday, the Fargo Police Department released a list of consequences for students who cause a ruckus.

If officers respond to loud parties, which they consider as a gathering of more than one person between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., a student could face a $200 fine. If they refuse to leave the party, police said a student can be fined $500.

Furthermore, a minor in possession of alcohol could face a $400 fine, according to police.

Annie McIntosh, 21, is a junior at NDSU and lives near Mark Tumbo.

“Surprisingly, there's some older people, families but mostly college kids,” McIntosh said.

She knows college parties can get crazy.

“People are out and about and on the weekends they can get loud,” McIntosh said.

Despite the parties, Tumbo said he hasn’t had any issues with his college neighbors during the years he’s been living at his home.

“Generally, everybody’s from North Dakota. They're usually pretty quiet, and they're reasonable, and the well-being for you and your neighbor they care about it,” Tumbo said. “So, it's always a great experience having them around.”

He’s actually looking forward for the students returning to his block.

Students will start moving into dorms on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
