This year, Fargo Public Schools saw its student lunch debt grow to around $26,000 - now, certain families could start hearing from debt collectors.

Fargo Public Schools says financial donations will be used to cover as much of the school lunch debt as possible. The district says it also plans to work with families to help them cover what they owe, but after that, the debt from past due accounts will be turned over to collection agencies. The announcement comes as the federal government has asked the district to raise the cost of school meals.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the school district says:

"The School District tries to collect funds from families. We work diligently with families to try to bring them out of arears for their lunch accounts. Nutrition Services will utilize donated funds to cover school lunch debt when donation are available. After that point, according to our policy, passed due accounts are turned over to a collection agency."
