Fargo teens received the chance Saturday to learn from a former NASA astronaut and retired United States Navy Captain.

About a dozen teenagers were chosen to participate in a two day training that took place in downtown Fargo.

The free event was organized by the non-profit Higher Orbits.

“It's really important that we show students the possibilities that exists if they're willing to keep studying science, technology, engineering, and math,” Michelle Lucas, founder and president, said.

The non-profit encourages kids to choose careers in the S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) field.

Higher Orbits has traveled across 20 states, yet this was its first time stopping in North Dakota.

NASA astronaut Wendy Lawrence was speaking to the teens about the challenges of space travel. She said she does believe at one point we’ll get to Mars.

“We have the capability and more importantly we'll have a sustained attention span, so eventually we'll see humans land on the surface of Mars,” Lawrence said.

The teens also learned the importance of teamwork and communication at the training.
