Previously on The Hills: An Essential Catch-Up Guide

Speidi? Whitney? Justin Bobby? Let’s discuss where the “reality” show’s major cast members ended up—and determine who made the most of their time on the series.

Nearly 10 years ago, The Hills—MTV’s improbable ratings juggernaut about messy 20-somethings clubbing and crying in Los Angeles—came to a melodramatic close. But on Monday, the show is returning through a reboot called The Hills: New Beginnings. Though original lead Lauren Conrad and follow-up lead Kristin Cavallari are not coming back, much of the original cast is returning—including Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, Whitney Port, Audrina Patridge, and Brody Jenner. There are also two new Hill-ites: O.C. star Mischa Barton (whose casting is a brain-melter for many reasons) and Brandon Thomas Lee, son of Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson.

Considering how much time has elapsed between now and then, perhaps the time is right to take stock of the original cast and figure out where we left off with everyone—and who, if anyone, is the most powerful cast member now that both L.C. and Kristin are out of the picture. The answer may surprise you! (It probably won’t surprise you.)

Speidi

Yes, we are considering Heidi and Spencer to be a single unit. Once they joined forces, the couple became the show’s biggest villains by season three (though the lion’s share of the villainy certainly goes to Spencer). After The Hills, they blew through millions of dollars (a period Spencer is incredibly frank about in interviews) and bopped around television, joining the cast of any reality show that had the word “celebrity” in the title, including: Celebrity Big Brother and I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

They’ve since become parents to a little boy, Gunner, and Pratt, in particular, has pivoted to being Very Online, amassing nearly a million Twitter followers and starting a crystal company called Pratt Daddy, cashing in on his insane crystal obsession.

Are they the most powerful people in The Hills?: They are certainly the most powerful antagonists, yes, backed by the power of a thousand crystals.

Whitney Port

Whitney was always the calm in the eye of the storm. Watching her scenes was like taking a gentle sip of chamomile tea, or stepping into a closet full of warm, neutral tones. The most dramatic thing that happened to her was falling down on Good Morning America while future Glossier founder Emily Weiss, our lady of top shelves and dewy skin, calmly stood by.

After The Hills, Whitney got her own spin-off: The City, a New York-based show that followed her foray into the Serious Fashion World, landing a job at Diane von Furstenberg, and becoming frenemies with Olivia Palermo. Did I personally watch every single episode? Yes, absolutely. Did the rest of America follow suit? No, and The City fizzled out after two seasons. Whitney has since moved on to become “a wife, mother, influencer, entrepreneur, cofounder of Bundle Organics [a nutrition line geared toward expecting mothers], and a wearer of more hypothetical hats than I could ever fit in my closet,” according to the trailer for her recently launched podcast, With Whit. (Missed opportunity here to launch a micro-series titled Brevity Is the Soul of Whit, but okay.)

Is she the most powerful?: Considering the lack of drama she brings, not quite. But her résumé is the most perfect influencer bingo card.

Audrina Patridge

An OG cast member like Whitney, Audrina has been on the show since the first episode, introduced as a spontaneous new friend of Heidi’s. She spent most of her time on the show being on-again, off-again with resident baddie Justin Bobby and having roommate drama with Lauren (inspiring the iconic mascara tear moment). After The Hills, Audrina—now a mom to a little girl named Kirra—was given a Vh1 spin-off, Audrina, which was canceled after one season, and landed a brief hosting gig on the NBC lifestyle series 1st Look. As expected, her Instagram is full of a healthy amount of #spon.

Is she the most powerful?: Maybe, but it depends on whether or not she can conjure more mascara tears.

Justin Bobby

Justin Bobby was the show’s truest antihero, a man who was both very attractive and very ridiculous—devoting most of his time on the show to negging Audrina into oblivion. The longtime hairstylist, who was at once both extremely L.A. and extremely Williamsburg circa 2008, came to fame by styling hair for artists like Madonna and Maroon 5. After The Hills, he returned to his roots (heh), launching a vegan, organic haircare line called Brush Your Hair by Justin Brescia (his real surname). He’s also continued playing with his band BobbyrocK.

Is he the most powerful?: He always had potential…but then again, homeboy wore combat boots to the beach. He’ll have to really earn his power back.

Frankie Delgado

Frankie was the resident party boy, looped into the cast because of his nightlife connections and his friendship with Brody Jenner. He was never entangled in the show’s story lines, so he never got as much airtime as the rest of the cast. Now, he’s married with two kids and has continued working in the nightlife space, opening clubby, well-known spots and partying with his boys.

Is he the most powerful?: No! But hats off to him for always steering clear of the drama, and being the show’s sole person of color. (I mean, unless you ask Heidi.)

Brody Jenner

Brody is a persistent fixture of the reality-show world, quickly moving between shows like The Hills and Keeping Up With the Kardashians thanks to his celebrity-adjacent upbringing (he is Caitlyn Jenner’s son, a step-sibling of the Kardashians, a half-sibling to Kylie and Kendall, and the stepson of David Foster). He’s never been able to get his own show off the ground (RIP Princes of Malibu), but he’s always been interesting and flirty enough to join the cast of numerous series. He stuck around long enough on The Hills to become the focal point of the finale’s controversial ending, which saw Brody say goodbye to Kristin—only for producers to then reveal the scene was shot on a set, confusing viewers as to what was real and what was fake all along.

In his post-Hills career, Brody has since gotten married to his longtime partner, Kaitlynn Carter, and become, you guessed it, a DJ.

Is he the most powerful?: Untz-untz-nope-untz-untz.

Jason Wahler

The man who kept Lauren from going to Paris! He will always and forever have to live with that. Wahler, who left the show for good in season three after fueling a nostalgia story line for Lauren, has spent his post-Hills years speaking openly about his alcohol addiction and struggle with sobriety, as well as doing shows like Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. In a recent interview, though, he promised everyone would get to see his “authentic self” this time around on The Hills.

Is he the most powerful?: Non, which is French for no.

Stephanie Pratt

Spencer’s estranged sister spent most of her time on The Hills combatting her spiraling big brother, but she stuck it out until the show’s finale in 2010. Since then, she’s parlayed her stateside fame into full-blown reality-star fame over in England by doing shows like Celebrity Big Brother and Made in Chelsea, a Hills-esque series about young rich people. She also now speaks with a pseudo-British lilt, which is a very Madonna-meets-Gwyneth Paltrow power move. Watch this interview and listen to the way she says “show” and “Beyoncé.

Is she the most powerful?: The accent, the “big in London” energy…she might be.

Bonus: Natasha Bedingfield

Like you have to ask.

Is she the most powerful?: Yes.
