BYU’s top recruiting priority Andrew Gentry commits to Virginia

With the recruiting season in full swing the Cougars look to have taken their first big loss.

Four-star offensive lineman Andrew Gentry from Littleton, Colorado announced his commitment to Virginia on Twitter this afternoon. The LDS prospect out of Columbine High School who also had offers from Michigan, Alabama, Stanford and Notre Dame, was one of BYU’s top priorities this recruiting season.

BYU was hoping for some good news with signing day less than a week away but Bronco Mendenhall and company were able to come away with a huge steal for the Cavs. Their most recent success, including a ACC Costal championship, helped build momentum for the P5 program that will face Florida in the Orange Bowl later this month. While the majority of UVA’s recruiting is focused on the east coast they have been able to lure away a few of BYU’s top recruits, including their current starting running back Wayne Taulapapa.

Per 247 Sports Gentry was seen as one of the number one rated player coming out of the state of Colorado this year and was ranked the #6 overall offensive tackle. The 6’8” 310 pound offensive lineman helped lead the Columbine Rebels to the 5A state championship game where they fell to powerhouse Cherry Creek.

This is devastating news for the Cougars who currently sit at 73 on the national rankings for their 2020 class. Kalani Sitake and company will have some work to do in order to help build up this class before early signing day on the 18th.
