This summer, stylish celebrities haven’t shied away from challenging the fashion taboos you never knew needed challenging. Take the flip-flop, for instance—a sandal associated in perpetuity with the beach, that has since become the dressed-up evening shoe on rotation for Kim Kardashian West and Katie Holmes thanks to the addition of a heel.

Today, Sophie Turner makes the case for breaking another cardinal rule of style: socks and sandals, worn together. It’s a move that’s been called geeky, a move synonymous with dad-style. Turner, however, turns it into a discreet fashion statement. The actress hit the streets in New York City sporting a pair of comfy APL slides and graphic checkerboard socks. Up top, a cropped button-up shirt in a subtle gingham print and denim cut-off shorts were accessorized with squared sunglasses and a tasteful gold chain necklace. Which perhaps holds the key to why it all works: if the footwear’s gonna be cheeky, everything else must be chic.
