The death of George Floyd in police custody in America has sparked mass protests, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets as part of the debate around racism and police brutality.

And Wakefield Council has now confirmed that it will light its clock tower purple in a show of solidarity.

Coun Michael Graham, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “It is vital that we all stand together in support of all those across the world who are dealing with racism or any other forms of prejudice.

“We want to use our symbol of support and for this reason our Town Hall will light up for George Floyd and his family tonight.”

The clock tower has previously been lit to show support for NHS staff and key workers, and has recently turned green and blue in support of each group.

But it will be lit purple tonight (Wednesday, June 3), and again from Friday to Tuesday, as the council remains "determined to demonstrate its solidarity with those tackling racism all over the world."

It comes as Wakefield Stand Up to Racism urges people to join a national tribute to George Floyd and protesters this evening.
