UPDATE: D.A. includes murder in charges for fatal Albany downtown shooting suspect

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The suspect accused of killing a man in downtown Albany Wednesday has been identified.

Jazzy Huff, 27, has been charged with murder and voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Zenas Lee Davis, 38.

“It is more comprehensive to include both charges so when the evidence is presented to a grand jury, they all will have an opportunity to review all the issues and evidence to help make a decision,” said District Attorney Greg Edwards.

On Wednesday, Huff was not granted bond. He will have to in front of a superior court judge to ask for bond.

Huff, the owner of Jazzy Movers, and Davis, an employee, got into a disagreement over Davis’ pay, according to police.

Huff removed Davis from a job site and brought him back to Jazzy Movers, which is located at 100 block of Pine Avenue on the 2nd floor of the Candy Room, police reported.

Shortly afterwards, the two got into a disagreement then the shooting occurred.

Davis was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

Police said it was an isolated incident.

“We know that citizens are concerned so the Albany Police Department would like to dismiss any rumors that may begin to circulate,” APD posted to Facebook. “No City of Albany employees were involved in this incident. This was not a random shooting. The two men knew each other, and this was a workplace violence incident.”

Huff will make his first appearance at the Dougherty County Jail court Thursday morning.

Many people described the scene on Wednesday as hectic.

One downtown business owner said she’s relieved this was not just a random shooting.

“The first thing I thought was, I was hoping it was nothing random like someone just walking and shooting,” said Femi Anderson, owner of Renaissance Cafe.

The 100 block of Pine avenue was blocked off for more than an hour as investigators worked the scene of the deadly shooting.

“An individual came in and shot an acquaintance of his and somehow they got into it a dispute,” said Phyllis Banks, the Public Information Officer with APD.

Police said that around 1 p.m. Wednesday, Huff got into a disagreement over Davis’ pay.

Police said that after Huff had to remove Davis from a job site, the two came back to the Candy Room, exchanged words and shots were fired.

“We just have numerous shots that the deceased person has right now,” said Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler.

Business owners in downtown said they saw lots of commotion and fearing the worst.

“I would never want anything like that to happen. Even with us we try to keep our space secure. We even lock the door sometimes, just in case someone may just randomly come in,” Anderson explained.

Police assured residents it was an isolated incident.

“It was confined to one area. This was not a random shooting. It was between two people who knew each other and unfortunately it has ended in a fatality,” said Banks.

Still an unfortunate situation, Anderson said that information changed the perception.

“When I found out that they knew each other, that kind of changed my perspective on what could’ve actually happened,” said Anderson.

WALB News 10 reached out to the Downtown Development Authority for comment on the shooting, but no one has responded at this time.
