'I’d just like to know if she’s OK’: Man helps woman who was grazed by bullet in Albany shooting

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On Monday morning, the Albany Police Department (APD) reported that a 21-year-old woman was sitting in her car in the 1300 block of East Residence Avenue around 9 Sunday night when she was grazed by a bullet.

She made her way to the intersection of Clark Avenue and Carroll Street and got help from a person in the area, and was then taken to the hospital by EMS.

“The victim stated she was in the 1300 block of East Residence Avenue when a vehicle came by, shooting at some other people standing in a grassy area near where she was located. Two bullets struck the vehicle she was sitting in, one grazed her head. Several vehicles and the door of [a house on] East Residence Ave. were struck,” said the Albany Police Department.

Four people were inside, but no one was injured. Police do not believe the woman was the target of the shooting.

A Southwest Georgia man is relieved after he helped the woman who was grazed by a bullet Sunday night.

He, like many in Albany, is concerned about continuing gun violence.

This witness said he heard the shots, hit the ground then ran to help the woman who was across the street from his business.

As of Monday, he’s happy to learn she’s doing OK.

Kenneth Evans is the neighborhood handyman.

“That’s me,” he said while fixing a weed wacker.

Sunday night was almost like any other night at Kent’s on Clark Avenue.

“Yeah it was quiet til them guns went off. Five or six gunshots went off and I hit the ground," explained Evans.

Just when he thought it was over, he finds himself helping out yet again.

“I didn’t know what was going on. I walked over to her and it was blood running down her face. I put my hand on her head and told her to sit back down in the car,” Evans said.

Albany police say a 21-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet while she was sitting in her car on East Residence avenue.

“I’m thinking when she heard the gun and she went to ducking and drove off,” Evans explained.

However, she ended up right in front of his shop.

“I was glad to help. I was glad that she didn’t go any further and that she stopped right there and asked for help,” said Evans.

Evans said the woman called EMS and he gave them their location.

The incident hasn't left his mind since.

“The first thing that came to my mind when I came out that door this morning,” said Evans. “I’d just like to know if she’s OK.”

In the middle the interview with WALB, word got out, and he got his answer.

“I appreciate y’all taking care of my grandbaby last night,” said a man driving by in a car.

“That was your grandbaby?” Evans asked.

“Yeah," the man said.

“That is amazing, I’m glad she’s OK,” said Evans.

Family members said the victim is home and recovering.

Evans said he hopes to see more police patrolling their neighborhood at night.

This incident is still under investigation.
